Chocolate Apple Cake

Made this one from the Vegweb Iron Chef contest. So tasty! This would make a really fabulous vegan molten cake. More pics to come with the chocolate ganache drizzle later.

Like the pounds and pounds of apple peelings? We made the applesauce from scratch, of course.

Finished object and WIP

I accidentally left my socks at work yesterday, and the sweater pattern I wanted to buy could take days for my e-check to clear (grrrrrrr), so I cast on Calorimetry last night. Easy peasy! I did the whole thing (with modifications) in less than an hour, and used only leftovers from my ugly Tubey sweater. Too bad I don't have the long hair any more to cascade out the back. I think these will make good Christmas prezzies.

Excuse the very messy hair.

Oh, and also check out my lace socks! I actually found the 2x2 ribbing and the straight stockinette on my first socks a little tedious, so I thought that it would be great to break it up with a pretty lace pattern, like this one. I'm loving it!

Bored at work

You better be thankful I don't get bored at work often, because when I do, this is the shit I come up with:

What's Cooking?

So what's for dinner tonight? Mr.'s mother likes to make this recipe for us vegetarians, so that's what we decided to make. But we discovered after we started really craving it that we didn't even have one pound of eggplant from the garden, so we decided to make up the difference with squash from the CSA. Oh, and we'd veganize it. Oh, and cut out some of that oil. Oh, and make it a little more streamlined by not cooking that eggplant first. And it turned out delicious!

It barely follows that original recipe, but it's a loose derivative of... That's whole wheat shells from our co-op, red and orange tomatoes and eggplant from our garden, squash and garlic and basil from the CSA. Nutritional yeast instead of the cheese for the vegans. Lots of red pepper flakes.

I think I need to work on my What's Cooking? picture techniques, because I keep getting steam. How do I get around this? I like to eat my food reeeeally hot, so I'm not willing to wait too long...

**Adult Content**

Isweartogod that my Little Dog is a huge pervert. He's been getting busy with himself these last few months like it's his job. I kind of feel bad for him, because he doesn't appear to be able to uh, take care of business, and it seems to be a real nuisance. He actually seems embarrassed, and he can't walk properly when he is at attention.

So we took him to the vet yesterday just for a check-up, and when the vet asked if there are any problems or issues, we said, "Nope, he's just fine... Well, there is one thing..." I swear, it was really quite an embarrassing conversation. When I go to the gynecologist, I know what to expect, but it didn't occur to me that I'd be having this kind of conversation with my sweet middle-aged male veterinarian at 8 am on a Saturday morning.

Anyway, my vet has explained that in dogs, the area between the pen1s and the sheath can get dry, and that perhaps my pervy little dog is just licking in to lubricate it. Now, I still don't know, because I've seen the look he gets on his face when he's working on himself. And guess what the solution is? Our vet has dispensed to us a mild non-astringent disinfectant-- we are supposed to flush inside the sheath with this diluted mixture and KY Je11y. I swear, who does that?! We have in fact bought all the necessary products, including a bulb syringe, but ohmygodIjustdon'twanna...

Why can't he just be fat and anxious like Big Dog?

What's Cooking?

We've been harvesting tomatoes like it's no one's business (those small tomatoes grow like weeds and ripen very quickly!), so we had a counter full of tomatoes from our garden, the CSA, and Mr's colleague even brought him a bag of vegetables yesterday. So last night we decided to make this roasted tomato soup. We used up pretty much all of our ripe tomatoes, but it was definitely worth it. Gorgeous taste, and it was so easy!

My modifications: We doused our veggies pretty well in olive oil for the roasting, so we didn't use any butter once everything moved into the pot. We of course used vegetable stock instead of chicken, and we subbed out the cream. Oh, and I added basil, but as you can see, I added it as a garnish instead of blending it in the soup (I didn't want it to be a weird color).

Sock (singular)

I finished! Only one entire other sock to go...

But to be honest, it was easy, so I'm not particularly dreading it. Yes, time consuming (#2 needles), but not difficult.
It's hard to take a picture of your own foot without it looking like a sausage, and Mr. had already gone to bed, so check out my best efforts:

What's Cooking?

Look what we did!

We're getting down to the last few weeks of the CSA, but we got a bumper crop this week! Squash, tomatoes, garlic, lettuce, basil, dill, rainbow chard, etc. etc. So we made a gorgeous stir fry! We had made a New Year's Resolution to eat one new food per month, so tonight we used the kohlrabi that we recently bought. Delicious stuff, kohlrabi! I don't know where to find it except for Whole F00ds, but next time I find myself out that way, I'll definitely buy it again.

Our recipe:
a few large leaves of rainbow chard
1-2 Tb. sesame oil
1 hot pepper, cut in half
1/2 large onion, sliced
1/2 large bell pepper, sliced
2 cloves of garlic, minced
3 small kohlrabi bulbs, peeled and julienned (thick)
1 medium summer squash, cut on the bias
shoyu

Wash, then prepare the swiss chard by cutting the leaves off the ribs. Cut the ribs on the bias and roughly chop the leaves.

Heat a large wok with sesame oil. Add the hot pepper, onion, chard ribs, and bell pepper and stir fry until the vegetables start to take on color. Add the garlic, kohlrabi, and summer squash, and cook until everything is tender and slightly browned. Add some shoyu and chard leaves and cook until the chard is wilted.

We meant to put scallions and/or basil for garnish, but it was so tasty, we forgot about decoration and scarfed it down naked. Mmmmmm.

Happy Birthday to Me!

My little sister's boyfriend asked me last night if I'm the kind of person who celebrates my birthday for days at a time... Apparently, I am this year. What did we do?

Friday night, the Mr. took me to an Elvis Costello concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Bob Dylan was actually the headliner, but we went for Elvis, and he did not disappoint! Second row on the floor-- the man knows how to treat a lady.

Saturday night we met some friends at one of my favorite bars here in the city. Good food (even for vegetarians!), good and inexpensive beers, foosball, a jukebox with all the 80s music you could ask for. Good times!

And then today, my in-laws came in to the city for the Crafty Bastards fair. They brought me a great birthday prezzie-- the top box I've been wanting for my scooter. I bought a couple cute things for myself at Crafty Bastards, and then we went out for lunch in Adams Morgan... Very fun day.

All that, and I've made some crazy progress on my first sock! Short rows, turning the heel, selvedge stitches... all new techniques to me, but no problems whatsoever. All I have left is 5 inches of the foot and then the toe!

Go to the Green Festival. And eat pickles.

Seriously, go. If you live in DC, it'll be here in a few weeks. I think we're going both days (in fact, we postponed a little vacation because of the scheduling conflict). We had such a blast last year, and this year, my guy from our CSA will be speaking as one of the presenters. How cool is that?

Speaking of the CSA, we're going back out to the farm this Sunday. I am really not looking forward to the end of the growing season, which means cold weather and foreign fruits and vegetables. So we're trying to squeeze in some good time harvesting on the farm before that first frost. From my awesome farmers and in honor of my dad, who is this very moment fasting for Yom Kippur (and will break his fast with these pickles tomorrow night!), this recipe for half-sours:

Cucumbers
Sea Salt (1.25 Tbs. for 2.25 lbs. of cucumbers)
Canning jars & lids

Wash the cucumbers you are going to use. You can also let them rest for a few hours in nice cool spring water (not chlorinated!) so they are nice and juicy. Take a quart-size mason jar, sprinkle a half dozen peppercorns, same amount of coriander seeds, 2 bay leaves, half tea spoon of mustard seeds, and 3-4 peeled whole or halved cloves of garlic. You can also add a couple of sprigs of fresh dill leaves or flowers, or a half teaspoon of dill seeds. Pack the jar vertically with 3-4 large cucumbers, or 5-6 smaller ones. Pour over the cucumbers and herbs a salt-brine of 1 pint of water to 1.5 teaspoons of sea salt. Make sure the water just about covers the tops of the cucumbers, then cover the jar loosely with its lid, so that air can escape when fermentation begins. Throw a kitchen towel over the jar to keep them in the dark. You may hear a sizzling sound after a day or two – that’s a good sign that the fermentation has begun!
After 2-3 days, see if the color has started to change from bright green to a yellow-green. That means you can put your jar in the fridge to slow down the fermentation process and keep your pickles crunchy! Serve as an appetizer, or chop into a cucumber & tomato salad. Use the salty pickle juice as you would vinegar in a salad dressing or add a cup full to a soup or stew!

My Life as a Cartoon

If I were a Simpsons character, I think I'd be this girl.

I'd obviously be a music teacher and preach my vegetarianism and environmentalist propaganda, but Lisa has pretty much all that wrapped up already... I don't think there's a Simpsons character who rides a scooter yet-- maybe that can be my shtick!

Finished object

Another set of mitts.

Love these guys! I can't wait to drag my pair out and start wearing them again. This will definitely work nicely into my "Teensy Bit Funkier Style" motif that I've got going this year.

Return of the Stinkhorns

Earlier in the summer, I discovered a freakish crab-leg-looking thing growing in our garden. Mr. was very curious, and so he googled "alien chicken foot in my garden" and came up with a stinkhorn mushroom. Apparently, these things appear inexplicably (often in urban settings), attract flies, stink to high hell, and look like crab legs, chicken feet, octopus tentacles, or phallic figures.

Gross.
Gross.
Really gross.

Anyway, we dug it up, wrapped it in plastic bags, and threw it away. For months now, no sign-- but today I discovered another one, almost in the same place. Some of the literature we discovered said that once you've got them, they spread voraciously and they are notoriously difficult to get rid of, so I am quite nervous that they may come back again. I tried very carefully to dig up everything nearby, but I think I'm going to mulch that spot just to be sure.

This one is considerably less freakish than our first one, but had I left it for another day or two, I'm sure it would turn into alien spawn again.

Naked Post

I've been wanting to post something, but I have no pics to go along with... Now that I've figured out how to upload pics to the computer, find them on the computer, and upload those onto my blog, I feel like a post is naked if it doesn't have a pic. What a very sad, naked little post.

Good thing for you, my dog has been particularly cute lately, so I have been taking pics of him (to go along with the other 80,000 pics of him on Mr.'s computer). I'll get them up soon so everyone can say, "Awwwwwwwwwww."

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow!

Look what I did on vacation!

I've been talking about chopping the locks since before the wedding (that's June 2006, people), so I figured while we were at the beach, might as well just get rid of it so as to have less to get nappy and tangled up. The stylist put it into two pigtails and just hacked 'em off. While she was cutting the first one, I could feel my stomach in my throat, but everything else was fun and relatively easy. I do love how it dries in 5 minutes, and I love not brushing it. I also love tossing my head around and feeling spunky. I'll see how it handles in the motorcycle helmet tomorrow and report back.

Anyway, I've got the 16-inch pigtails in a plastic bag ready for Locks of Love or Wigs for Kids. I donated them to Locks last time, but I'm still doing research about which organization I want to support this time.

On a completely unrelated note, our garden exploded again while we were on vacation. Two of my okra plants got knocked down in a storm, I guess, but everything else is thriving nicely. When I got back, I had cucumbers, lots of obscenely huge okra, tons of tomatoes, cayenne and Thai lemon peppers, and one white eggplant. My food is so pretty!

Vacaaaaaaaation Time!

Oy, we leave for the beach in 18 hours or so, and I've got plenty to do! My to-do list:
-Clean up kitchen and clean out fridge
-Pack
-Over water all the houseplants and garden
-Reprogram thermostat
-Pick all ripe and halfway ripe veggies from the garden so that nothing rots on the vine

Speaking of the garden, I've been marveling over my gorgeous okra, which I love to eat, but also the flowers that grow on this plant. Seriously lovely. I like this pic because of all the lovely bugs in my garden too. Hope they don't eat veggies while we're away!

I went to my yarn shop today and picked up some goodies to work on while we're at the beach.

I think I'll have plenty to work on! That's two hanks of Linen Tweed and two of Cotton Classic mercerized cotton for dishcloths, 8 skeins of Sirdar Click for a sweater, and one super cool skein of Sitron Trekking sock yarn for my first pair of socks! And the new sock book by Ann Budd, sock needles, and a few new stitch markers. Yep, I'll be busy. I think I'm starting on the socks, because that's something new to me.

Yarn P0rn Survey

1. What kind of fibers do you prefer? Anything with cashmere or silk (no brainer), although I am increasingly fond of alpaca.

2. What kind of weight do you prefer (sock, worsted, bulky)? Meh, it depends on the project. Obviously.

3. Do you spin? No.

4. Do you crochet? I can crochet a single chain! Yay me!

5. Are there any books, patterns, magazines would you like to own that you don't? Fitted Knits, a couple things from Debbie Bliss, and the Vee pullover.

6. Are you participating in any themed a-longs like the Project Spectrum? I'm a member of some Dishcloth Yahoo Group, but I haven't done a knit-along since... well, ever.

7. Do you have a wishlist on Amazon.com or Half.com? Eh, I have stuff leftover from my wedding registry, but it's just plates and stuff.

8. Any Etsy stores that you would love to get something from? Nah, I just browse.

9. What other crafty things are you involved in (quilting, drawing, painting)? Bead making, turning trash into treasure (I believe they call that recycling!), repurposing jewelry and other random things.

10. What is your favorite sort of scent? Herbal-- lavender, tea tree oil, rosemary, that kind of thing.

11. Do you have a sweet tooth and what kind of sweets do you like best? Most def-- I like ice cream and fruit flavored things, although who doesn't like chocolate?

12. What kind of music do you like? I know it's a cliche, but I really will listen to anything. I'm a musician, so I want something that uses more than 3 chords. But I'm a singer, so I like something with a good melody I can sing to.

13. What do you like to knit? And for whom? Everything. I tend to pick smaller projects that don't take tons of time, but I've done a few big projects here and there. I knit almost exclusively for other people, although every once in a while I decide to keep something for myself. Once I start doing more sweaters, I'm keeping them for myself!

14. What sort of things do you like to collect? Garbage.

15. Do you want needles? And what kind do you prefer? Yes yes! Knitpicks Options set is numero uno on my birthday wishlist, although I love working with DPNs now and need a few other sizes. I also need some sock needles.

Late Night, Early Morning

And here I was, feeling all sorry for myself because I have to be at work 2 hours early tomorrow morning. This afternoon, Mr. called to say that he was going to have to work late. No biggie, right?

So he calls again a few hours later, saying it could be much later. So I plan on having dinner without him and that's life.

A few hours ago, he called and said he hadn't even left yet, and oh yeah! He has to be in at work tomorrow at 3 a.m. for some computer thing going into production. So Poor Baby is going to sleep under his desk from whenever he finishes tonight (hopefully he's done!) until 3 or so, when he will wake his ass up and get back to work. SUCKS to be him.

Seriously though, it feels weird not having him home. We spend plenty of alone time, but it's weird to sleep in that big bed by myself. Good thing I have hot and furry dogs to keep me company!

First Post

Who the hell wants to read about me?

I cook.
I walk my dogs.
I exercise.
I travel.
I play the piano.
I speak Spanish and French.
I teach.
I knit.

But I guess I do other stuff too. Like walking around the house with no pants, or better yet, with no clothes. And I ride a scooter to work-- I guess that's a little out of the ordinary. Anyway, we'll see if I really have anything to say.
